Big Data Poised to Save Our Water

Eric 3Eric Christenson, Director, Enterprise Solutions Practice

In my job as Director of Business Development at ETwater I meet a lot of people who genuinely care about our water resources and want to do something about not wasting it… we can all make a difference and do better.

If you read the water scarcity facts on our new website you might be surprised to learn (or perhaps you already knew) that typically 50% of potable water in the U.S. is used outdoors and of that, generally 50% is wasted through the traditional 20th century landscape irrigation methods and systems! Due to over watering we see excessive runoff doing damage to landscapes, walkways, patios and parking areas …when it looks like rain, how about we don’t water our lawns? That would seem logical, but the technical intelligence required to automate an irrigation system to perform this way has been a dozen years in the making. ETwater is now the only smart irrigation service that has successfully incorporated such a predictive weather capability.

You may have heard the term Big Data? I explain it as the characterization of all information we’ve been collecting for thousands of years (i.e. plants, water, soil, weather) that is theoretically now accessible by anyone. It’s being functionally enriched for use through the “Internet of Things (IoT),” or essentially, all of our 21st century connected smart devices. ETwater is both a Big Data and IoT company..I’m available and welcome the opportunity to talk with anyone about saving water through smart irrigation… We can together move the needle quickly toward greater social responsibility and sustainability with our water…
